5.2 Harder Questions

·
Collins p.106 Q.1-3. (Table of densities below)
Image001
1. Objects that will sink.
 wood in oil (depends on type of wood)
silver in air
gold in mercury

2. dimensions = 0.065 x 0.2 x 0.09 = 0.00117
mass = 2.22 kg
Density = m/V = 2.22/0.00117 = 1897 kg/m^3

3. If the crown is pure gold, the new volume of the water would be 800+100 = 900cm^3. (Density = m/V, 19.3 = 1930/V, V=100cm^3.) The water level would be greater than 900cm^3 since iron has lesser density (therefore greater volume with the same mass) than gold.

·
How can you make a cannonball float?

Explanation below…

Density of Iron =  7.9g/cm3 or 7,900kg/m3
Density of Mercury =  13.6g/cm3or 13,600kg/m3

5.3) Density of Irregular Object

Density of Irregular Object

1. m = 109g
2. V = 36 cm^3
3. p = m/V = 109/36 = 3.03 g/cm^3

Density of Liquid (result)

Results: Density of Water (H2O)

1. m(cylinder) = 50g
2. m(cylinder + liquid) = 68g
3. m(liquid) = m(cylinder+liquid)-m(cylinder) = 18g
4. V(liquid) = 19.5 ml = 19.5 cm^3
5. Density = 0.92 g/cm^3
